Mumbai: Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers recently shared his thoughts on Indian cricket’s big changes. He spoke about Shubman Gill’s new role as India’s Test captain, Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket, and RCB’s journey to the IPL 2025 final.
Reflecting on Kohli’s legacy, de Villiers expressed optimism for India’s cricket future.
Shubman Gill as India’s New Test Captain: “Time for Youth to Step Up”
De Villiers reacted to Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s Test captain for the England series.
“It’s time for the younger players to step up,” he said. “Shubman Gill has taken on the responsibility. India has a lot of talent, thanks to the IPL.”
He highlighted Vaibhav Suryavanshi, an emerging star from this IPL season.
“We saw Vaibhav Suryavanshi this year. It will be a tough challenge against England,” he added.
Virat Kohli’s Test Retirement: “He Followed His Heart”
De Villiers praised Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket.
“He listened to his instincts,” he said. “Kohli has made a huge impact on world cricket.”
He reassured fans that Kohli’s journey isn’t over.
“Luckily, we’ll still see him in action. He leaves behind a great legacy in red-ball cricket,” he added.

RCB in IPL 2025 Final: “This Could Be Their Year”
As a former RCB star, de Villiers shared his excitement about the team reaching the IPL 2025 final.
“I’m thrilled that RCB made it to the final,” he said. “Mumbai Indians won last night, and Qualifier 2 will be exciting.”
He believes RCB has a real chance to win their first IPL title.
“I can’t wait for the final,” he said. “This could be RCB’s year.”
