Karnataka Rain Alert: Red Alert in Dharwad, Schools Shut, IMD Issues Statewide Warning Till June 17
Karnataka is currently facing a spell of intense monsoon activity after the southwest monsoon reactivated following a two-week pause. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several regions, particularly in the Dharwad district, and released a seven-day rain warning extending till June 17. As a precautionary measure, authorities in the most affected areas have taken swift action, including the temporary closure of educational institutions.
In Dharwad district, the Deputy Commissioner has declared a one-day holiday for Anganwadis, primary and high schools, as well as PU and degree colleges, following the red alert issued for the region. This move comes in response to heavy rainfall that caused severe waterlogging in parts of the district, particularly in Hanashi village and surrounding areas. The torrential downpour was recorded early on June 12.
The IMD forecast highlights that rainfall will be “fairly widespread” across south interior Karnataka until June 14. From June 15 onward, the rain pattern is expected to become “widespread,” affecting nearly all districts in the state with varying intensities.
