Ammy Virk Completes 10 Years in Acting: “Now We’re Cast as Heroes, Not Just Sardar Characters in Bollywood” – Top15News: Latest India & World News, Live Updates

0 Years of Ammy Virk: Changing the Face of Punjabi Actors in Bollywood

Ammy Virk recently completed a decade in the film industry as an actor. Speaking in his trademark witty style, he said, “Now I feel like a senior. Time just flew, but the love has been immense.” His acting journey, which began years after his musical career, has redefined how Punjabi actors are viewed in Bollywood.

From Singing to Acting: Inspired by Kishore Kumar

Ammy shared that his inspiration to act came from legendary singer-actor Kishore Kumar. Just like many early Bollywood stars who were singers first and actors later, Punjabi culture too follows a similar path.

“There are two advantages for makers when casting singers—they already have a fanbase and camera experience,” says Ammy.
“I’ve learned on the job, and now it feels natural.”

A High Box Office Success Rate

Reflecting on his journey, Ammy highlighted the importance of early success. He shared that his initial films performed well, helping him cement his position.

“My success ratio is around 80-85%, and that’s rare. I’ve even done films that break away from traditional Punjabi cinema.”

His consistent box office record in Punjabi films has made him one of the most bankable stars from the region.

Breaking Bollywood Stereotypes About Punjabis

Ammy emphasized a significant shift in how Punjabi characters are portrayed in Bollywood. A decade ago, Sardars were often used as comic relief in films, but today, actors like Ammy and Diljit Dosanjh are leading roles and being cast as authentic characters.

“Now we are being approached to play heroes and not just a Sardar character in Bollywood,” he said.
“Back then, we would ask—why are they portraying us like that? But now, things have changed. Filmmakers understand our potential.”

The ‘Animal’ Movie Example: Authentic Casting

Ammy referenced Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, where Punjabi actors were cast for Ranbir Kapoor’s cousin roles. He appreciated how today’s writers and directors are aiming for realism and regional authenticity.

“They want characters to reflect the real essence of that region.”

Yet to Deliver a Major Bollywood Hit

Despite his impressive run in Punjabi cinema, Ammy has yet to score a big Bollywood hit. His first two Hindi films—Bhuj: The Pride Of India and ’83—underperformed at the box office. His recent releases in 2024, Bad Newz and Khel Khel Mein, were average performers.

Still, Ammy remains confident.

“People in Mumbai know my capability. Timing was the issue, not my talent. A flop film doesn’t reduce an artist’s potential, it just affects the price tag.”

Final Thoughts: A Decade of Growth and New Horizons

Ammy Virk’s 10-year acting journey is not just about personal success—it reflects a broader transformation in the way Punjabi actors are viewed in mainstream cinema. No longer limited to stereotypes, they are taking center stage and reshaping Bollywood narratives.

With his passion, talent, and belief in authenticity, Ammy is paving the way for future Punjabi artists in the national film industry.
