Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Gets CBFC Clearance; Set for Release on June 20 – Top15News: Latest India & World News, Live Updates

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par has finally cleared the last hurdle before its theatrical release. After facing a temporary roadblock due to objections raised by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the film has now officially received clearance, according to reports from Bollywood Hungama.

This development comes as a major relief for both the makers and Aamir Khan’s massive fan following, who were eagerly awaiting the film’s release. Sitaare Zameen Par, touted as a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par (2007), is now set to hit theatres across India on its scheduled date—20 June 2025.

CBFC vs Sitaare Zameen Par: What Was the Controversy?

The trouble began when the CBFC reportedly asked for two specific cuts in the film. However, Aamir Khan and the film’s director, RS Prasanna, refused to comply with these demands, citing that the scenes in question were crucial to the film’s narrative.

A source close to the production revealed,

“Aamir Khan feels the film should be passed without these cuts. He and RS Prasanna have made the film with a lot of thought. Certain scenes and dialogues, when seen in context, seem completely appropriate.”

While the exact details of the objectionable scenes were not disclosed, the disagreement led to a delay in the awarding of the censor certificate. The absence of the certificate also delayed advance ticket bookings, as per CBFC norms, which require certification before ticket sales can begin.

Mutual Agreement Reached, Clearance Granted

Despite the initial deadlock, it now seems that both parties have reached an understanding. According to reports, Sitaare Zameen Par has been granted clearance by the CBFC, though it remains unclear whether any modifications were ultimately made to the final cut. With certification now in place, theatres are expected to start advance bookings soon, ramping up excitement around the release.

Interestingly, while the Indian CBFC had objections, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had earlier passed the film with a 12A rating, stating that the film contains ‘discrimination and moderate sex references’.

The film has a run time of 2 hours and 35 minutes, promising an emotional yet thought-provoking cinematic experience.

Plot, Cast, and Significance

Sitaare Zameen Par stars Aamir Khan in the lead role, with Genelia D’Souza playing the female lead. What makes this project particularly special is the inclusion of 10 neurodivergent actors making their acting debut:

  • Aroush Datta
  • Gopi Krishna Varma
  • Samvit Desai
  • Vedant Sharma
  • Ayush Bhansali
  • Ashish Pendse
  • Rishi Shahani
  • Rishabh Jain
  • Naman Mishra
  • Simran Mangeshkar

The film, co-produced by Aamir Khan Productions, is being positioned as a spiritual successor to Taare Zameen Par, which highlighted the struggles of a dyslexic child and touched millions of hearts globally. This time, the focus is on celebrating children with neurodivergence, showcasing their talents and challenges.

Director RS Prasanna, in an interview with Live Mint, addressed the weight of expectations:

“The pressure is always there. Even now, I’m excited and nervous too. I hope the audience gives it the love they gave to the trailer. I can’t wait to see the response in theatres.”

Why Sitaare Zameen Par Matters

In a cinematic landscape where commercial entertainers dominate, Sitaare Zameen Par stands out as a meaningful project that combines mainstream appeal with a socially relevant subject. By casting neurodivergent actors, the film also takes a bold step towards representation and inclusivity in Indian cinema—an area that has long remained underserved.

Additionally, after the box-office underperformance of Laal Singh Chaddha, this film is seen as Aamir Khan’s big comeback vehicle, both critically and commercially.
