DMK’s Elangovan Addresses Tambaram Shelter Assault Case, Stresses Swift Police Action
The alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl at the Tambaram Government Service Home for Women has sparked strong reactions from political leaders in Tamil Nadu. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan stated that such incidents stem from “personal mindsets” rather than a systemic law and order failure, emphasizing that the police have acted swiftly in the case.
DMK’s Stand: Individual Crime, Not Systemic Failure
Speaking on the issue, Elangovan clarified that isolated incidents of crime should not be seen as a reflection of the state’s overall law and order situation.
“These are individual incidents that arise from personal mindsets. Recently, an AIADMK member was caught harassing a girl, and he was immediately expelled from the party. While such cases are concerning, they do not indicate a broader governance failure. The police have taken prompt action—arresting the accused and ensuring legal consequences. In all such cases, the guilty have been held accountable. Each incident must be addressed individually,” he said.
The remarks came after reports emerged that a minor girl residing in the Tambaram Government Service Home was allegedly assaulted by the home’s watchman, leaving her injured.
AIADMK’s Criticism: DMK Government Faces Backlash
Meanwhile, AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi Palaniswami strongly condemned the incident, calling it a failure of the DMK-led state government.
In a social media post, Palaniswami expressed shock over the incident, stating:

The watchman, who was supposed to protect the girls, has been arrested for this heinous act. That a young girl is unsafe even in a government-run facility exposes the DMK government’s failure. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should hang his head in shame.”*
He also demanded:
- A thorough investigation into whether other girls in the home faced similar harassment.
- Proper medical treatment for the survivor, who reportedly suffered a leg fracture.
