In a dramatic shift in weather, Gurugram and parts of Delhi-NCR were battered by incessant rains on the night of July 9, 2025, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and the closure of several offices. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the region, indicating the possibility of intense weather and urging residents to remain cautious.

According to official data, Gurugram recorded 133mm rainfall in the past 12 hours (from 7 PM on July 9 to 7 AM on July 10). The most intense spell occurred between 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM, dumping 103mm of rain in just 90 minutes, triggering flash floods in many low-lying areas.

Work From Home Advisory Issued in Gurugram

Responding to the situation, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Gurugram has issued a directive advising corporate offices and private institutions to allow employees to work from home on Thursday, July 10, 2025. The decision aims to reduce traffic congestion, prevent accidents, and ensure the safety of commuters amid widespread waterlogging.

Delhi-NCR: Rain Brings Relief from Heat, But Sparks Chaos

In Delhi, the rain brought much-needed relief from sweltering humidity and heatwaves. Overcast skies and continuous showers cooled the region significantly. However, the downpour also led to waterlogging in areas like Moti Bagh, ITO, Ring Road, and Lajpat Nagar, slowing down traffic and straining drainage systems.

Visuals from across Delhi and Gurugram showed vehicles wading through knee-deep water, stranded commuters, and traffic snarls on major routes. Emergency services and municipal workers were seen attempting to drain water from key intersections.

Weather Forecast: More Rain Expected in Coming Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a continuation of the rainy spell for the next 2–3 days. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh also echoed the warning, stating that Gurugram will experience generally cloudy skies with a few spells of rain or thundershowers.

IMD Forecast for Delhi-NCR:

  • July 10: Thunderstorm with moderate rain
  • July 11: Generally cloudy skies with spells of rain
  • July 12: Thunderstorms likely during the afternoon or evening

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Stay indoors during intense spells
  • Keep emergency numbers handy
  • Follow traffic advisories and official weather updates

Areas Worst Affected by Waterlogging

In Gurugram, the following areas faced severe waterlogging:

  • Sohna Road
  • Golf Course Extension
  • Cyber City
  • Rajiv Chowk
  • Hero Honda Chowk

Social media was flooded with videos showing cars submerged halfway in water, office-goers stranded, and traffic at a standstill.

In Delhi, underpasses like Minto Bridge and Pul Prahladpur were waterlogged, leading to temporary closure and diversions.

Public Reactions and Civic Response

Many residents took to social media to share their ordeal and seek updates. Hashtags like #GurugramRains, #DelhiRain, and #Waterlogging started trending.

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) issued emergency numbers and said that pumps were being used to clear flooded areas. However, criticism also followed for inadequate stormwater drainage systems and unplanned urbanization.

What Does Orange Alert Mean?

An Orange Alert by the IMD indicates:

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 204.4 mm)
  • Potential for waterlogging and flash floods
  • Need for preparedness and emergency response from civic bodies
  • Public advised to stay alert and minimize outdoor activity

Safety Tips During Heavy Rainfall

  • Stay indoors unless travel is essential
  • Use public transport if necessary; avoid two-wheelers
  • Charge your mobile phones and keep power banks ready
  • Don’t walk or drive through flooded areas
  • Watch for updates from IMD and local authorities
