Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a significant five-nation tour spanning Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The diplomatic initiative, extending from July 2 to 9, aimed to bolster India’s relationships across the Global South, solidify ties on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements within multilateral forums such as BRICS.
Deepening ties in Africa: Ghana and Namibia
The journey commenced in Ghana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the West African nation in over 30 years. PM Modi engaged in bilateral talks with Ghanaian President John Mahama, focusing on strengthening the existing partnership and exploring new avenues for collaboration, particularly in critical minerals, defence, maritime security, and energy. This visit underscores India’s commitment to deepening Global South cooperation and acknowledging the pivotal role of the African Union and ECOWAS.
Following the BRICS summit, PM Modi’s tour concluded in Namibia, where he further solidified India’s commitment to the Global South through discussions centered on capacity-building, infrastructure projects, and educational partnerships. The visit was marked by the conferral of Namibia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Order of the Most Ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis’, upon PM Modi.
Bridging the Atlantic: Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina
From Ghana, PM Modi embarked on a visit to Trinidad and Tobago, a nation with deep historical and cultural connections to India. This visit reinforced the strong bonds of ancestry and kinship between the two countries. Discussions with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across various sectors.
The tour continued with a landmark visit to Argentina, the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. As a key Latin American economic partner and G20 collaborator, Argentina provided a platform for discussions on strengthening cooperation in agriculture, critical minerals, energy, trade, tourism, and technology, according to the Economic Diplomacy Division.
Strengthening multilateralism: BRICS summit in Brazil
The centerpiece of the tour was PM Modi’s participation in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the summit, India emerged as a leading voice in shaping the BRICS agenda, advocating for themes of de-dollarization, climate finance, digital governance, and global institutional reform. According to Vajiram & Ravi, discussions included BRICS Pay and national currency settlement frameworks, along with the launch of a BRICS Multilateral Guarantee (BMG) mechanism by the New Development Bank (NDB).

PM Modi also used the BRICS platform to assert India’s leadership in the Global South, sharply criticizing double standards towards developing nations and calling for fairer development and resource distribution. Notably, India and China, despite their differences, reached agreements on de-escalation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the resumption of border patrols, potentially restoring investor confidence in key sectors. India’s position at the BRICS summit also included urging for reforms in global institutions, a greater say in the UN Security Council, and improved access to climate finance.
The BRICS Summit also witnessed the formal inclusion of Indonesia as a permanent member.
Global implications and India’s leadership
PM Modi’s five-nation tour reflects India’s broader foreign policy objectives of promoting a multipolar world order and strengthening its role as a leader of the Global South. India’s strategic balance between maintaining strong economic ties with the West and advocating for the interests of the Global South is crucial in navigating the complexities of the evolving global landscape. India’s upcoming BRICS presidency in 2026 presents a further opportunity to shape a South-led multilateral order, with gains expected across finance, climate, technology, and trade sectors.
This tour underscores India’s commitment to strategic autonomy, prioritizing diverse relationships over alignment with a single bloc. India’s diplomatic agility, coupled with its growing economic influence, position it as a bridge between diverse global interests, ensuring a more inclusive and equitable world order.
