Sony FX2 Camera Launched: A Compact Powerhouse for Pro Filmmakers and Hybrid Creators
Sony has launched its latest Cinema Line camera, the Sony FX2. It’s a compact full-frame camera designed for both professional filmmakers and hybrid creators. With advanced video features, a 33MP back-illuminated sensor, and a tilting electronic viewfinder (EVF), the FX2 brings cinema-quality to a smaller, more affordable body.
A New Entry Into Sony’s Cinema Line
The FX2 sits at the entry-level of Sony’s Cinema Line. It combines cinema-grade performance with user-friendly design. This makes it ideal for creators looking for a powerful camera that handles both video and stills.
Yann Salmon-Legagneur, Head of IP&S Marketing at Sony Europe, says the FX2 was developed from customer feedback. It aims to “empower creators across all content production fields” with features that enhance the filmmaking experience.
Full-Frame 33MP Sensor
The FX2 features a 33.0-megapixel full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor. It delivers excellent detail and dynamic range. With S-Log3, it offers 15+ stops of latitude for easier color grading.
The Dual Base ISO feature (800 and 4000) lets you shoot in both bright and low light. You can even expand the ISO up to 102400 for extreme conditions. This makes it perfect for run-and-gun filmmakers, documentarians, and low-light shooting.
Advanced Video Features
The FX2 supports a range of professional formats, including:
- 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra recording
- XAVC S-I DCI 4K at 24.00p
- Up to 60 fps in 4K and 120 fps in Full HD for slow motion
It offers flexible shooting modes: Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, and Flexible ISO. Users can load up to 16 LUTs for consistent monitoring from shooting to post-production.

Built for Long Shoots
The FX2 is designed for long recording times. It can shoot 4K 60p continuously for up to 13 hours. The camera’s thermal design keeps it cool during long shoots.
It includes three mounting points (UNC 1/4-20) for easy tripod or rig mounting. An optional XLR top handle provides professional audio support.
Next-Level Autofocus
Sony’s Real-time Recognition AF tracks humans, animals, birds, vehicles, and insects. It ensures sharp focus even with moving subjects.
Other AF features include:
- Breathing compensation for smooth focus changes
- AF Assist for manual override
- Custom AF speed and sensitivity settings
The tilting EVF makes it easy to shoot from different angles, ideal for solo creators or filmmakers in the field.
Compact and Lightweight
Despite its advanced features, the FX2 stays portable:
- Dimensions: 129.7 x 77.8 x 103.7 mm
- Weight: Approx. 679 grams (body only)
It’s perfect for handheld, gimbal, or drone use.
Pricing and Availability
The Sony FX2 comes in two versions:
- Body only: $2,699.99
- With XLR top handle: $3,099.99
This pricing makes it one of the most affordable cameras in Sony’s Cinema Line.
A Hybrid Powerhouse
The Sony FX2 bridges the gap between professional cinema cameras and compact hybrid models. Its full-frame sensor, advanced AF, long recording times, and tilting EVF make it a solid choice for filmmakers, YouTubers, and content creators.
Sony’s message with the FX2 is clear: Bring cinema-grade production to everyone.
