Speaking at an event in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, PM Modi announced that BrahMos missiles will now be manufactured in Lucknow, as part of the UP Defence Corridor project. During his speech, PM Modi revealed that Lucknow will be a key hub for the manufacturing of the BrahMos missile system. This advanced supersonic cruise missile is regarded as one of the most potent in the world, capable of precision strikes at long range. He emphasised that if Pakistan dares to commit any “sin” again, missiles made in Uttar Pradesh will be used to destroy terrorist targets.
The move is part of the larger UP Defence Industrial Corridor initiative, which aims to boost India’s defence production and reduce dependency on foreign suppliers. Several leading defence firms are setting up their manufacturing units in the region, signalling a major step forward for India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” mission in defence.
‘BrahMos’ as a Deterrent
PM Modi highlighted the psychological impact of the BrahMos missile on Pakistan, stating that just hearing the name is enough to keep them awake at night. The missile has already proved its efficiency during military operations, including the recently concluded Operation Sindoor, where India showcased its indigenous weapon systems to the world.

This unity, according to Modi, is essential for promoting swadeshi (indigenous) products and achieving self-reliance across all sectors.

PM Modi reinforced his call for Indians to support local industries, stating, “We will buy only those things that are made by Indians… We need to become vocal for local.” He stressed that buying Indian-made products strengthens the economy and creates jobs, ultimately making the nation stronger in every aspect.
This appeal comes at a time when India is facing economic challenges and global criticism, including a recent remark by US President Donald Trump, who labelled India a “dead economy” while criticising its ties with Russia and imposing a 25% tariff with “penalty.”
