New Delhi, June 14: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly condemned the recent act of vandalism at Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home ‘Kachhari Bari’ located in Sirajganj district, Bangladesh. The party has termed the attack as “pre-planned” and politically motivated, accusing the Bangladesh government of negligence and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of maintaining a strategic silence on the matter.
What Happened at Tagore’s Ancestral Home?
On June 10, a violent mob attacked the Rabindra Memorial Museum, previously the ancestral residence of Rabindranath Tagore, raising anti-Tagore slogans. The vandalism stemmed from a local dispute on June 8 over a parking fee involving a museum official and a visitor. The altercation reportedly escalated into physical violence, leading to heightened tensions and public outrage, eventually culminating in the vandalism of the historic site.

BJP’s Strong Reaction: ‘Attack Was Pre-Planned’
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson and MP Sambit Patra described the incident as “pre-meditated” and accused the Bangladesh administration under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s leadership of deliberately ignoring the gravity of the situation.
“According to media reports, the attack was premeditated, intended to send a larger message to the world by targeting the house of someone who stands as a cultural icon. The silence and inaction of the Yunus government on such a serious issue is uncalled for,” Patra said.
Attack on Mamata Banerjee’s Silence
Sambit Patra also criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that her silence on the matter is politically motivated.
“This issue should have been raised by Mamata Banerjee herself. But her silence is strategically driven by her fear of upsetting a section of her voter base, particularly those with roots in Bangladesh,” Patra claimed.
The BJP emphasized that Rabindranath Tagore is not just a literary icon for Bengal but a towering global figure representing Indian culture and values. The party expressed disappointment that such an attack on his legacy has not received a robust condemnation from neighboring Bangladesh or from political leaders in Bengal.
Why This Incident Matters
- Cultural Heritage Under Threat: Rabindranath Tagore, the author of India’s national anthem and a Nobel laureate in literature, holds immense cultural and historical significance for both India and Bangladesh.
- Political Implications: The BJP has used the incident to target both the Bangladesh government for inaction and Mamata Banerjee for her alleged political compulsion-based silence.
- India-Bangladesh Relations: Such incidents can potentially strain cultural relations between India and Bangladesh, especially considering the emotional and historical importance of Rabindranath Tagore for both nations.
