Punjab VB Raids: Hours After Ranjit Singh Gill Joins BJP – Top15News: Latest India & World News, Live Updates

In a dramatic turn of events in Punjab politics on Saturday, August 2, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) conducted surprise raids on the residential and commercial properties of Ranjit Singh Gill in Chandigarh. This action came just a day after Gill announced his entry into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — on Thursday night.

Entry into the BJP

Ranjit Singh Gill, formerly an active member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), officially joined the BJP on August 1. The induction was formalised by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Gill, a well-known realtor with strong influence in the Kharar assembly constituency, described his move as a break from “the neglect of local workers and preference for outsiders” within the SAD.
Dissatisfied with SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal’s leadership style and internal party politics, Gill resigned from SAD and moved to BJP to “serve the people more effectively.”

The Raids — Timing and Context

Unlike routine political shifts, the VB raids were the first major action to hit the headlines immediately after such a political crossover.
According to sources, the VB team arrived at Gill’s Gillco Valley project office and his residence in Kharar between 9:30 am and 9:45 am, accompanied by a heavy police presence.

The timing triggered immediate political speculation: Was this an independent investigation or a politically motivated reaction to Gill joining BJP just hours earlier? BJP leaders present at the scene called it “political vendetta,” claiming the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was using state agencies to target opponents.

AAP spokespersons, on the other hand, stated that “the agency should be allowed to do its work” and insisted that the VB “likely has credible evidence” to justify the raids.

Political Reactions

Senior BJP leaders, including Subhash Sharma, openly termed the raids an example of “vindictive politics” by the AAP government, alleging misuse of investigation agencies to harass opposition leaders.
In contrast, AAP defended the move as part of regular investigation procedures, while also accusing BJP of orchestrating Gill’s induction as a political stunt.

What Makes This Different?

This is not the first time in Punjab that political events and VB actions have appeared linked. Recently, court orders in cases involving SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia restricted surprise raids without prior legal notice, following allegations from opposition parties that the AAP government was weaponising law enforcement.

Against this backdrop, the action against Gill — happening so soon after his BJP induction — naturally stands out as a political flashpoint.

Possible Outcomes and Political Impact

  1. A Warning Sign for BJP
If Gill aimed to start a fresh political chapter from Kharar, the VB raids could affect his chances for a party ticket in future elections.
  2. SAD Connection in the Background
Once close to SAD, Gill’s exit and subsequent BJP entry comes at a time when several SAD leaders face legal troubles — potentially dragging Gill into an overlapping narrative.
  3. AAP’s Institutional Role
Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the AAP government of misusing state institutions for political purposes, and this case could add to that perception.
  4. Public Sentiment in Kharar
For local voters, the incident could be seen either as political retaliation or as a legitimate anti-corruption measure — a divide that could impact Gill’s public image.

The sequence of events — Ranjit Singh Gill quitting SAD, joining BJP, and facing VB raids — is more than just a matter of timing. It symbolises the tense relationship between political rivalry and state machinery in Punjab.
Whether this develops into a full-blown political storm or remains an administrative inquiry will depend on upcoming court hearings, VB reports, and how Gill’s legal strategy unfolds.
