Why Roger Binny is Stepping Down
Roger Binny is a former Indian cricketer and was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team. He became the 36th president of BCCI in October 2022, taking over from Sourav Ganguly. According to BCCI’s constitution, no office-bearer can hold their post after turning 70 years old. Binny will turn 70 on July 19, 2025. After that, he cannot continue as president.
During his time, Binny kept things steady. He managed big events like the ICC World Cup 2023 in India and worked to improve domestic cricket. The BCCI rules say that when the president steps down, the Vice President must take over as interim president until new elections happen.
Rajeev Shukla: An Experienced Leader
Rajeev Shukla is well known in cricket administration. He is also a politician and a Member of Parliament. Shukla has worked with BCCI and the Indian Premier League (IPL) for many years. He was the IPL Chairman before and has been Vice President of BCCI since 2020.
Shukla knows both cricket and politics well. This makes him a good choice to lead the BCCI temporarily. He has dealt with tough issues like media controversies and negotiations with cricket groups. Shukla’s interim term will last until the next BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September 2025. At that meeting, new elections will decide the full-time office-bearers.
