Glenn Maxwell Opens Up on His ODI Retirement: The Unselfish Truth – Top15News: Latest India & World News, Live Updates

Glenn Maxwell Announces ODI Retirement

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from ODI cricket. The announcement came on Monday, June 2. Maxwell said he will no longer play the 50-over format. He will, however, play in the T20 World Cup in 2026. Maxwell explained he did not want to continue for selfish reasons.

A White-Ball Cricket Legend

Maxwell, 36, is one of the best white-ball batters of his time. He played a key role in Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup win. His innings against Afghanistan and the Netherlands were crucial.

Preparing for the Future

Maxwell admitted his body was struggling. He spoke with George Bailey, Australia’s chair of selectors. “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit,” Maxwell said. “I don’t think I’m going to make it to 2027 — it’s time for others to step up.”

A Selfless Decision

Maxwell didn’t want to keep his spot just to play a few more games. “I always said I wouldn’t give up my place if I was still good enough,” he said. “But I didn’t want to hang around just for a couple of series. This is the best chance for the team to build for the next World Cup.”

A Rocky Relationship with the Team

Maxwell’s time with the team has had its ups and downs since 2022. He faced criticism for off-field behaviour. He also broke his leg in an accident while partying. In 2024, he collapsed at a concert and was taken to hospital.

Maxwell’s ODI Career in Numbers

Maxwell played 149 ODIs. He scored 3,990 runs at an average of 33.81. He made four centuries and 23 fifties. As a part-time off-spinner, he also took 77 wickets. His all-round skills made him a key player for Australia.
