Mandi, Himachal Pradesh [India], July 5: The death toll in Mandi district has climbed to 14 as a result of massive destruction and loss of life caused by cloudbursts and flash floods brought on by heavy rainfall. The most impacted areas are Thunag subdivision, Karsog Gohar subdivision, and Dharampur subdivision, according to DC Mandi Apoorv Devgan.

A total of 31 individuals are reported missing following a deadly cloudburst that struck Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi area on the night of June 30 and July 1. The natural disaster has caused widespread devastation, isolating numerous distant settlements and forcing some families to flee.

“The flood has completely destroyed homes, killing livestock and causing severe damage to roads, water pipes, communication networks, and the electricity grid,” stated Apurv Devgan, Mandi’s Deputy Commissioner. He emphasized the immense hardship faced by locals who’ve lost all their possessions and are now desperately seeking food and shelter.

According to officials, “People are left with nothing – no homes, food, or electricity. “Entire markets and houses have collapsed.” In this environment, people’s primary struggle is simply surviving.

Following the tragic natural disaster in Mandi district, local NGOs and charity are actively assisting the affected. The Chail Chowk Vyapar Mandal of Nachan has provided emergency food supplies to afflicted families in Siraj, proving their commitment to humanitarian aid.

Rajkumar Thakur, head of the Chail Chowk Vyapar Mandal, said in an interview, “We’ve provided food packages to about 110 families affected by the disaster in the Seraj assembly district.  Each package has enough food for a small family to get by for 10-15 days.  We wanted to show our support for those who’ve lost everything.”

The Siraj area, home to many remote and hilly villages, has been the worst affected by this disaster. Landslides and broken roads in Siraj are causing great difficulties in rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department in Himachal Pradesh has warned of more rain in the coming days, due to which the Himachal Pradesh administration and army teams are on high alert. NDRF, SDRF and army teams are still continuously trying to reach the worst affected villages.

During this time of distress, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has proposed many relief measures for the affected families. Addressing the media in Shimla following a high-level review meeting on Friday, Chief Minister Sukhu stated that the state is currently suffering a “war-like disaster.”

He stated, “We have reviewed the current natural disaster situation throughout the state.” The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to provide monthly rent assistance of ₹5,000 to families living in relief camps looking for rented houses in their villages.

The purpose of this decision is to provide relief to the affected families who have lost their homes and means of livelihood. The government and local organizations are continuously working together to provide relief to the people affected by this disaster.
