Lieutenant Governor Backs CM’s Drive to Transform Delhi – Top15News: Latest India & World News, Live Updates

A Green Revolution at the Heart of Delhi

In a powerful step toward environmental restoration and waste management, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena came together on Sunday to plant saplings at the reclaimed Okhla landfill site. The initiative symbolizes Delhi’s transition from “Garbage Mountains” to green public spaces.

From 28 Years of Garbage to a Park in 100 Days

The Okhla landfill, once home to waste accumulated over 28 years, has undergone a dramatic transformation. Out of 62 acres, 40 acres have been cleared and levelled in just 100 days. This cleared land is now being converted into green zones with tree plantations and future development plans for:

  • Children’s parks
  • Sports grounds
  • Public libraries
  • Community spaces

CM Kejriwal called it a historic achievement, stating: “This is proof that with strong will, nothing is impossible.”

The event witnessed the presence of key dignitaries including:

  • Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi
  • Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj
  • MCD Commissioner Ganesh Shaib
  • DJB Vice Chairman
  • LG’s Advisor A.K. Singh

Their collective participation underlines the unified vision across administrative lines to build a greener, healthier capital.

The Bigger Picture: Tackling Delhi’s Daily Waste Crisis

Delhi currently produces 11,000 tonnes of waste daily, but the disposal capacity is only 7,000 tonnes per day, leaving an excess of 4,000 tonnes that continues to accumulate in landfills like Ghazipur and Bhalswa.

To solve this:

  • New waste processing plants are being planned
  • 11 additional sites identified for mobile processing units
  • Disposal capacity is expected to reach 15,000 TPD (tonnes per day)

LG Saxena emphasized that the Okhla model will now be replicated at other landfill sites, promising a scalable and sustainable waste solution for the entire city.

From Landfills to Lungs of the City

So far, over 1.78 lakh tonnes of waste have already been removed across landfill sites. The current disposal rate of 8,000 TPD is a significant improvement, and with continued government focus, the aim of a “Garbage-Free Delhi” no longer feels distant.

Delhi’s Green Makeover: More Than Just Symbolism

This campaign isn’t just about cleaning up; it’s about creating livable, green, and inclusive urban spaces for future generations. CM Kejriwal and LG Saxena’s joint efforts underscore a rare administrative harmony with a common goal — to restore Delhi’s environment and public health.

As the Chief Minister concluded, “Making Delhi waste-free is no longer a dream — it is becoming a reality.”
