The coin, a powerful symbol of India’s maritime history and cultural heritage, was unveiled during the Adi Thiruvathirai Mahotsavam held in Gangaikondacholapuram, Tamil Nadu — the ancient capital of the Chola empire.

The idea of this commemorative coin originated with R. Komagan, Chairman of the Gangaikondacholapuram Development Council Trust. He not only proposed the concept but also designed the coin and submitted it to the central government for approval. Upon receiving the necessary green light, the Ministry of Finance and Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India (SPMCIL) minted the special RS 1000 Coin.
Dignitaries present at the coin launch included Tamil Nadu’s Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar, and VCK Leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, all of whom were among the first recipients of the commemorative piece.

PM Modi highlighted that the Chola dynasty was far ahead of its time in governance, diplomacy, and naval prowess. Rajendra Chola I, who ruled between 1014 and 1044 CE, expanded his empire through sea-based military expeditions reaching modern-day Sri Lanka, Maldives, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
In his speech, PM Modi remarked that “history often celebrates kings who looted treasures, but Rajendra Chola I is remembered for bringing the holy Ganga water to South India.” This act is immortalized in the Tamil phrase “Ganga Jalamayam Jayasthambam,” referring to the sacred water being poured into Cholagangam Lake, now known as Ponneri Lake.

Drawing parallels with Western democratic systems, the Prime Minister underscored how the Chola Empire implemented Kudavolai electoral practices, considered one of the earliest forms of democratic elections in the world. This refutes the common belief that democratic governance is a Western construct, affirming that India had developed advanced systems of representation over a millennium ago.
Modi asserted, “When the world talks about Magna Carta in the UK, we must remember that the Cholas implemented electoral democracy centuries before.” This gives a unique sense of pride and repositions Indian history at the global center stage.

The RS 1000 Coin is a fusion of artistic brilliance and historical symbolism. The obverse side features:
- Rajendra Chola I seated on horseback
- A sailboat in the background
- Emblems representing the Chola empire
- Inscription of the 1000th anniversary
- The denomination “₹1000” prominently displayed
Made of high-quality alloy with precise engraving, the coin is more than a collector’s item — it is a storytelling artifact. The reverse side features the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the Indian national emblem, flanked by the words “Satyamev Jayate” and “Government of India.”
Only a limited number of coins have been minted and distributed to key state figures and select collectors, making it a rare and prized possession for heritage enthusiasts.
