External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s recent visit to China marked a significant moment in the evolving India-China ties. This was his first visit to the neighbouring country since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, a flashpoint that severely impacted diplomatic relations. Jaishankar met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing and apprised him of the current trajectory of bilateral relations between the two Asian giants.
The External Affairs Minister also conveyed warm greetings on behalf of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Chinese President. During the meeting, Jaishankar emphasised the importance of continued leadership dialogue to maintain momentum in India-China ties.
Meeting with Xi Jinping: A Diplomatic Milestone
While addressing media and sharing updates on social media platform X, Jaishankar wrote, “Apprised President Xi of the recent development of our bilateral ties. Value the guidance of our leaders in that regard.” His post underscored the central theme of this diplomatic tour: strengthening India-China ties through structured dialogue and mutual understanding.
This engagement was not only symbolic but also strategic, as it followed months of steady improvement in relations post the 2024 Kazan summit between PM Modi and President Jinping.
Focus on De-escalation and Cooperation
One of the major highlights of the ongoing diplomatic thaw has been the planned disengagement of troops from Depsang and Demchok, key tension points in Ladakh. The 2020 border clashes had put India-China ties under immense strain, but efforts since late 2024 have aimed to restore a sense of normalcy and progress.
Jaishankar’s Multi-Level Talks in China
Apart from meeting President Xi, Jaishankar also held discussions with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Foreign Minister Wang Yi. These discussions will likely cover economic cooperation, regional stability, and cross-border infrastructure projects.
Before heading to China, Jaishankar had completed a visit to Singapore, making this his second stop in a crucial two-nation tour focused on enhancing India’s diplomatic engagement in Asia.
Importance of India-China Dialogue
During his remarks, Jaishankar reiterated that open exchanges between India and China are essential. “As neighbouring nations and major economies, an open exchange of views and perspectives between India and China is very important. I look forward to such discussions during this visit,” he noted.
His statement reflects India’s broader foreign policy strategy — engaging with China diplomatically while remaining firm on national security and sovereignty.
A Step Forward in Bilateral Relations
The visit highlights an emerging positive trajectory in India-China ties, particularly since the 2024 Kazan meeting. Both sides seem committed to stabilising their relationship, reducing tensions along the LAC, and enhancing bilateral cooperation in multilateral forums like the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
With Jaishankar representing India at the SCO ministerial, his presence in China also signals a commitment to maintaining peace in the broader Asian region.
