Bollywood icon Sonali Bendre, celebrated for her elegance and talent throughout the 90s, has once again proven why she remains such a respected figure—both on and off screen. In a recent interview, she addressed a viral video that sparked speculation about MNS chief Raj Thackeray allegedly having a crush on her two decades ago.
With characteristic poise, Sonali dismissed the rumor saying, “I doubt it,” and clarified that in the clip, she was simply chatting with her sister who was seated beside her.
“Turning Memories into Gossip Is In Poor Taste”
Sonali expressed disappointment at the gossip culture, emphasizing that such speculation can unfairly impact personal lives and families.
“People should understand the repercussions of turning old memories into sensational headlines.”
She called for more sensitivity and responsibility, especially when the stories involve real individuals with real relationships.
Old Family Ties, Not Personal Proximity
Bendre detailed the long-standing and respectful association between her family and the Thackerays. Her sister’s mother-in-law was once an English Literature professor at Ruia College, with close ties to Raj Thackeray’s family. Additionally, Raj Thackeray’s wife Sharmila’s mother was a close friend of Sonali’s aunt.
However, Sonali clarified that she personally hasn’t had a close or ongoing relationship with the Thackerays due to growing up mostly outside Maharashtra.

No Plans to Enter Politics
When asked about entering politics, Bendre made her stance clear with a touch of humor:
“I don’t have a thick enough skin for politics, and I’m not politically correct enough either.”
This candid remark underscores her authenticity and self-awareness—traits her fans admire.
OTT Comeback with ‘The Broken News’
Sonali Bendre has made a powerful digital debut through ZEE5’s popular series ‘The Broken News’, where she plays senior journalist Amina Qureshi. The role marked her return to acting after years and was widely praised for its emotional depth and realism.
Beating Cancer and Inspiring Millions
In 2018, Sonali was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment in the United States. Her journey was marked by strength, hope, and transparency. Today, she actively engages in raising awareness about cancer and emotional wellness, becoming a symbol of courage for many.
