Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions Escalate into Deadly Clashes – Top15News: Latest India & World News, Live Updates

In a disturbing escalation of long-standing tensions, Thailand and Cambodia have exchanged deadly fire along their contentious border, leading to at least nine civilian deaths and over a dozen injuries. This recent confrontation, which took place on Thursday, July 24, 2025, has triggered serious diplomatic fallout, sealed borders, and rising fears of a broader military conflict in Southeast Asia.

Clashes at Multiple Border Points

According to reports, six civilians were killed in Thailand’s Si Sa Ket province, including individuals struck by gunfire near a gas station. Explosions were heard in nearby provinces, and a livestream from Thailand’s side showed panic-stricken locals fleeing to bunkers. The conflict reportedly began in the early morning hours near the Ta Muen Thom temple, which straddles the Thailand-Cambodia border, and soon spread to at least six conflict zones.

Accusations from Both Governments

The governments of Thailand and Cambodia are both blaming each other for initiating the attacks. According to the Thai army, they spotted six armed Cambodian soldiers advancing toward their military post, and attempts to de-escalate were met with open fire from the Cambodian side. Thai authorities also claimed drone surveillance detected movement before the attack.

In response, Cambodia’s Defense Ministry stated that Thai troops launched a drone incursion, and that Cambodian forces only retaliated in self-defense, rejecting what they called “an unprovoked violation” of their sovereignty.

Diplomatic Fallout

The situation has deteriorated diplomatically just as rapidly. On Wednesday, Thailand expelled Cambodia’s ambassador in protest of a land mine blast that injured five Thai soldiers. Cambodia countered by downgrading diplomatic relations and expelling the Thai ambassador. All Cambodian personnel have also been recalled from their embassy in Bangkok.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry accused Cambodia of bombing a hospital and violating multiple civilian zones. In response, Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that while Cambodia prefers peaceful dialogue, it had “no choice but to respond to armed aggression.”

Military Measures Intensify

Thursday’s events included airstrikes by Thailand on Cambodian positions, including roads near the contested Preah Vihear temple—a historic flashpoint. This site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been a source of military tensions since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in 1962 that it belongs to Cambodia—a decision Thailand continues to contest.

Recent reports also show Cambodian forces laying new Russian-made land mines, an act Thailand called a breach of a mutual agreement to keep certain paths demilitarized. Cambodia rebuffed these claims, suggesting the explosives may be leftovers from past wars.

Growing Civilian Risk and Evacuation Alerts

With fears of continued escalation, Thailand’s embassy in Phnom Penh has urged all Thai citizens in Cambodia to leave immediately. The Thai government has also sealed all border crossings, citing the risk of further attacks on both military and civilian installations.

Worryingly, Thailand has indicated it may “intensify self-defense measures” under international law if Cambodia continues what it views as “armed violations of sovereignty.”

Political Turmoil in Thailand

The conflict has also resulted in domestic political repercussions. Thailand’s Prime Minister has been suspended from office amid an ongoing investigation into alleged ethical misconduct linked to the border dispute. Observers believe the situation may have been mishandled, contributing to the present breakdown in diplomacy and border security.

A History of Conflict

The Cambodia-Thailand border has long been fraught with tension. While most disputes involve minor skirmishes, there have been periodic military clashes, especially near the Preah Vihear and Ta Muen Thom temples.

A ruling in 2013 by the ICJ reaffirmed Cambodia’s sovereignty over the Preah Vihear area, but Thailand’s nationalists and military hawks have kept the issue alive, leading to frequent confrontations.
